Trail Daze at the Demonstration Forest
January 15, 2005

Thanks to Mark Elliott, DF leader, who filed this workday report:"The DF trail was hard hit by the first great storms of winter 2005! Thanks to Jerry Spruill for the photos! Too bad we didn't think to take a "before" photo of the Grand Canyon. Although, there are still a couple sections that have some erosion damage, we could still get a couple shots of a less damaged trail for the archives. David Arndt put on a great hands-on seminar about erosion control on trails using no hardware like the traditional railroad ties, lumber or rock. It really was neat to think about how to build and maintain a trail with nature in mind. To make gradual swales to drain off water and to make them "invisible" to the traveller (especially the elementary school BMX riders who will make a jump out of any kind of bump). The history of trail building and its evolution is truly a lesson in ecology. So, the 4 musketeers carefully surveyed the slopes and angles and pitches and then scraped and carved and molded D.G. like it was an artist's canvas. It really looks good! Also, thanks to Mark Tomes who provided us with muffin sustenance!"

David, Mark T., and Mark E., the trail guys, talking.
