Projects and Activities
SANTA MARGARITA SCHOOL DEMONSTRATION FOREST (DF)
 
Description / Current Status: Located along the H St. entrance to Santa Margarita School, the DF is a 32’ x 272’ nature study area featuring trees adapted to local growing conditions and a meandering pathway. Created in 1997 with help from a California ReLeaf grant, the sweat of many volunteers and the cooperation of the Atascadero Unified School District, this beautiful school and community resource is maintained entirely by volunteers.
Volunteer Opportunities: Workdays are held on the second Saturday of each month, October through May, 9 - 11 AM. Come join us!

SANTA MARGARITA SCHOOL OAK TRAIL
 
Description / Current Status: Oak educational trail (seasonal use/access only with teacher or docent) now under development on ~ 15 acres of Santa Margarita Ranch adjacent to Santa Margarita School; collaborative effort involving the Ranch, School, Santa Margarita 4-H, the Land Conservancy of SLO, the Native Tree Committee of SLO Co., and others; Supported by a 2005 Oak Woodlands Conservation Program grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board.

DF NATURE CHALLENGE
 
Description / Current Status: Monthly prize drawing at Santa Margarita School to reward nature detectives for identifying mystery inhabitants of the Demonstration Forest. Started in Nov. 05 with leadership of artist/naturalist Marguerite Costigan and support from the SMCF Education Committee. New series of challenges started Sept. 06 and will continue through this school year.

DF ADOPT-A-TREE
 
Description / Current Status: Santa Margarita School classrooms have the opportunity to adopt a tree in the Demonstration Forest. Adoption portfolios and activity ideas provided.
