SMCF Demonstration Forest
Our Demonstration Forest, located along the H Street entrance to Santa Margarita Elementary School, was created in 1997 largely through the efforts of volunteers. Materials and coordination were supported by generous local donors and a grant from California ReLeaf/National Urban Forestry Grant Program. The Demonstration Forest now provides practical, educational and aesthetic benefits to the school and the community. The Demonstration Forest is maintained by teams of volunteers from local community groups who take responsibility for monthly care assignments. Thomas and Simone Smith, proprietors of The Educated Gardener, a local nursery, oversee the irrigation system and tree health needs.
Site of future demonstration forest in August 1996 included four elms in poor health and some scraggly junipers. Site is on Atascadero Unified School District property adjacent to Santa Margarita Elementary School.
